Among the highlights of the Spoleto Festival USA in Charleston each spring are the choral concerts given by the Westminster Choir. The 2014 edition of the festival featured two programs led by Joe Miller , and we present highlights from each on this edition of the series.

Week of May 10, 2015

A rising young composer returns to his alma mater in Greenville, SC for this edition of the program. The Rivertree Singers perform a work by Dan Forrest that is quickly becoming the composer’s most popular piece in a concert from the campus of Bob Jones University. Then it’s over to the Stevens Center in Winston-Salem, NC for highlights from an October, 2014 concert featuring an overture by Shostakovich and Brahms’ iconic first symphony.

Week of May 3rd, 2015

Superstar cellist Yo-Yo Ma visits the Palmetto State on this edition of Carolina Live! He’s the special guest for an October 2014 concert with the Greenville Symphony Orchestra and their venerable conductor to play the powerful concerto by Edward Elgar.

Week of April 26, 2015

The Peace Center Concert Hall in Greenville was the ideal setting for this concert from October of 2014. It features music of consolation and inspiration by Brahms, Ralph Vaughan Williams and Gustav Mahler, as well as a recent work by a hometown favorite.

Week of April 19, 2015

The King of Instruments is in the spotlight is in the spotlight on this episode. The setting is the Visitors Center at Old Salem Museums and Gardens, where in 2014 they celebrated the restoration of the historic 1800 David Tannenberg organ with a special concert series. This program features two events in the series.

The South Carolina Philharmonic welcomes back local favorite Marina Lomazov for Tchaikovsky’s beloved concerto, and she treats the crowd at the Koger Center to an encore from Tchaikovsky’s The Seasons. 

Week of April 5th, 2015

This Easter season edition of the program features Bach’s first and less-frequently performed setting of the Passion of Christ. Though there is controversy in some quarters regarding the text, there’s no disagreement about the power of the music. 

Week of March 19th, 2015

During the 2014-2015 concert season the Western Piedmont Symphony in Hickory holds an ongoing “Battle of the Bows” to determine its next resident string quartet. First up in the competition is the Tetra Quartet performing in a Chamber Classics Concert from September of 2014. 

 
Week of March 22nd, 2015

The Greenville Symphony Orchestra and their renowned maestro began the 2014-2015 concert season by welcoming the rising young violinist Elena Urioste to perform Elgar’s epic concerto from 1920.
